Underclassmen were the story this season in Big Eight Conference boys golf.
Led by Madison La Follette sophomore Andrew Steinhofer, four of the five first-team selections were underclassmen. Janesville Craig's Charlie Roherty, a junior, was selected to the first team for the second-straight year.
Steinhofer was the Big Eight's Player of the Year, edging teammate Max Hosking for the honor. Steinhofer finished fourth in the WIAA Division 1 state meet and accumulated a 12.4 score for the conference season. Hosking, a junior, won the prestigious John Ashenfelter Invitational title and finished with a conference score of 12.5
Roherty, who won the Big Eight meet in 2006, finished with a 22.9 score for the conference season and helped lead the Cougars to the Division 1 state meet.
The Cougars finished ninth in the 36-hole tournament, while Middleton was second and Madison West fourth.
"Charlie's a competitor," Craig coach Mike Wesling said. "Our goal as a team was to get back to the state meet, and part of Charlie's job as one of the leaders on this team was to keep everyone focused on that.
"A couple of years ago, after (Sam) Van Galder left, I told Charlie and Bobby (Kennedy) that this was their team for the next couple of years. They knew they would be running the show and they did a good job of it."
Other first-team selections were Beloit Memorial senior Jon Kemman (24.1) and Madison Memorial junior Jason An (24.3).
Kennedy, a senior, was a second-team selection, while Janesville Parker's Sam Larson received honorable mention.
