FONTANA-Voters approved a referendum Tuesday to spend up to $225,000 for a new wrought iron fence to replace the cyclone fence around the municipal beach.
Village clerk Dennis Martin said 268 ballots were cast, with 165 in favor of the new fence and 103 against.
The fence will be paid for through the village's community development program and tax increment district funds. It will run from the lake's edge in front of the beach house to Fontana Boulevard, then south along the boulevard over Abbey Channel and along the southern portion of beach, ending at Harvard Avenue.
Joseph McHugh, director of the village's community development agency, said bids on the fence will be let this year. Engineering work will start this fall, but actual construction is not expected to start until next spring.
Work is to be completed before the 2008 Memorial Day weekend, McHugh said.
