Janesville police are investigating a report of an early morning home invasion and attempted sexual assault.
They do not suspect the reported incident is connected to the city's string of similar incidents committed by a serial rapist.
"The suspect is of a different description and used a different mode of entry," Sgt. Charles Aagaard said.
They also don't think there's a connection to the May 31 assault of a woman on the bike trail.
"This is a completely different type of crime," Deputy Chief Dave Moore said. "They both may be sexually motivated, but a nighttime covert entry into a home versus a daytime overt assault is significantly different. Plus the descriptions of the suspect are significantly different."
A woman told police this morning that a light-skinned black man, about 220 pounds and 6 feet 5 inches tall, entered her North Pontiac Drive apartment through an unlocked patio door, Moore said.
The woman told investigators that her attacker had a tattoo on his left arm from his shoulder to his elbow and wore black pants, a black sleeveless shirt and a black bandanna, Moore said.
Police were called at 3:53 a.m. by victim's boyfriend, who came home and was told by his girlfriend that the assault happened two hours earlier, Moore said.
The woman said she was in bed when the suspect entered the apartment, approached and fondled her. The woman told police she screamed, and the suspect fled on foot toward Menards, Moore said.
Police are reviewing statements from the victim and assigning detectives to the case, Moore said.
