Investigators think they solved the shooting of a Janesville man reported just after midnight with the arrest of one of his acquaintances.

Holice J. Wiggins, 26, of 159 Linn St., was in critical condition this morning at Mercy Hospital in Janesville where he underwent surgery for multiple gunshot wounds, at least one of which was to his torso, said Lt. Tim Hiers of the Janesville Police Detective Bureau.

Alonzo K. Potts, 33, of 1608 N. Randall Ave., No. 19, Janesville, was in custody today at the Rock County Jail on a preliminary charge of attempted first-degree intentional homicide.

Potts is the only suspect, and investigators are interviewing several witnesses to the shooting inside Wiggins' home, Hiers said.

The detective anticipated that Potts will make his initial court appearance Wednesday.

Potts and Wiggins had been out drinking in at least one downtown bar before the argument in Wiggins' home ensued, apparently over a variety of issues, Hiers said.

"We're still trying to nail down the specifics," he said.

Hiers was unsure whether either man was drunk at the time of the shooting.

Police received a call of "shots fired" at 159 Linn St. at 12:02 a.m. today. Four minutes later, they received a report of a gunshot-wound victim at Mercy Hospital.

At least one of the witnesses took Wiggins to the hospital, Hiers said.

Police recovered a .380-caliber pistol they think Potts used to shoot Wiggins.

Officer Jason Horton spotted Potts' vehicle, which had been described by witnesses, a short distance from Wiggins' home and arrested him on McKinley Street, Hiers said.

Wiggins has lived in Janesville for at least three years, Hiers said. He was unsure how long Potts has been a Janesville resident.

A check of court records showed neither man has an extensive criminal record. Both have several traffic offenses and ordinance violations.

Wiggins' most serious offenses were domestic disorderly conduct and obstructing. Potts was found guilty of disorderly conduct and drunken driving.
