WHITEWATER-UW-Whitewater Chancellor Martha Saunders is the preferred candidate to become president of the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Miss.
In a message to UW-Whitewater staffers Tuesday, Saunders said it was an opportunity she "really must pursue."
Saunders graduated from high school in Hattiesburg and refers to the city as her alma mater.
Saunders, 59, has served as chancellor at UW-Whitewater since August 2005. She replaced Jack Miller, who was hired as the 12th president of Central Connecticut State University.
As yet, no official announcement has been made about Saunders' future at UW-Whitewater, said Sara Kuhl, director of news and publications.
Saunders will visit the Hattiesburg campus Thursday, April 5, to meet with USM leaders. It's the final step in confirming a new campus president.
"We're excited for her to have this opportunity, but it will be a huge loss for us," Kuhl said. "Chancellor Saunders has created a great framework for our strategic plan. She has a strong presence on this campus with faculty, staff and students. It's a credit to her that this university is in such good standings."
Saunders' vision will help lead UW-Whitewater into the future, Kuhl said.
