A good Samaritan learned the hard way that squirrels don't make good pets.
A 47-year-old Janesville woman contacted police Friday night to report a squirrel bit her. The reporting officer witnessed scratches on her right hand and a bite mark on the pinkie finger, according to a police report.
The woman said she found the squirrel in her window sill about three weeks ago, and it looked very small and sick so "she was trying to care for it," the report said.
She was trying to release the animal Friday when it got loose in her house. When she picked it up, it bit and scratched her, according to the report.
"Because the squirrel is obviously a wild animal, it didn't have a rabies vaccination, nor did it have an owner," the report said.
The Rock County Humane Society took custody of the squirrel, and an animal bite order was completed. The woman was advised that the Rock County Health Department would contact her if there were problems, and she was advised to seek medical attention if she sees signs of an infection, according to the report.
