EAST TROY-The Walworth County Sheriff's Department suspects alcohol and speed resulted in a one-car crash and fire in Troy Township on Thursday. The consequences for three 20-year-old East Troy men:
-- Matthew P. Edwards is in a Milwaukee-area hospital with severe burns to his lower body and a broken leg. The sheriff's department reported this morning that Edwards was in critical but stable condition.
-- Justin H. Fondrie suffered a broken arm.
-- Driver Michael J. Farrell is in the Walworth County Jail with no apparent injuries. He faces possible charges of causing great bodily harm while driving drunk, speeding, underage drinking and failure to wear a seat belt.
The sheriff's department was called to the scene on Nature Road south of Burr Oak Road at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
Investigators believe Farrell was driving the small car faster than the 45 mph limit when he lost control on a hill. The car went off the road, hit a tree and caught fire. Farrell and Fondrie escaped. Edwards was trapped in the front passenger seat of the burning car, but Farrell and Fondrie freed him.
