Will you support Braun when he returns?
I had a brief phone conversation with a relative last night regarding Milwaukee Brewers star Ryan Braun. The teamís season is already in the tank, so the fact that Braun has been suspended for the rest of the year for violating baseballís drug program should have little impact on the teamís fortunesóother than perhaps fewer fans passing through the turnstiles.
My relative asked if Iíd support Braun when he returns next season. Even that prospect isnít guaranteed. Remember that San Francisco star Melky Cabrera was suspended for 50 games last season, and the team released him after winning the World Series.
However, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel tweeted Monday that the Brewers don't have an escape clause to get out of the $133 million still owed in his contract. Still, the Journal Sentinelís Michael Hunt had harsh words for Braun today, calling the ďtarnished golden boyĒ a cheater and a self-righteous liar.
Braun ruined the reputations of those involved in the testing process last year with his flat denials as he narrowly escaped a suspension. He may have even used performance-enhancing drugs to fatten his current contract, Hunt noted. He let down his fans, his admirers, the game and Brewers owner Mark Attanasio.
I feel a great sense of betrayal. Iíll never cheer for Braun again, I told my relative last night. He was surprised to hear that.
The Brewers should trade Braun if they can. I donít care. Iíd just as soon see him out of Milwaukee.
How do you feel?
